Archeological and architectural buffs will find plenty to admire in Alghero as well as throughout Sardinia. There are a collection of tombs at Anghelu Ruju which is quite close to Alghero Airport. The tombs themselves are a fascinating find and well worth a look.
Get the family in your Alghero Airport car hire and head roughly one hour up the road to the town of Argentiera. This is an old mining town with work beginning as far back as the Roman ere right up to the nineteen sixties when the town finally ran out of resources. The town remains very similar to how it was before production stopped with the old church and miners buildings still intact. Argentiera is a ghost town these days.
The town of Bosa is situated about a three quarter hour drive in your car hire from Alghero. Bosa remains undiscovered by many tourists and thus retains much of it Sardinian charm. There are many architectural delights in the town including Castello Malaspina which was once a medieval stronghold. The cathedral in the town is a fine case of rococo architecture while the Spanish Watchtower is also well worth a close up look.
Sardinia never stops giving when it comes to archeology. Tharros is a must visit. The area was founded by the Phoenicians before the Romans took over. There is now an outdoor museum in the area where can get close up to the baths, temples and all the artifacts which have been found in the area.
